Rebirth

“Rebirth” is a metal sculpture created by Asheville artist Berry Bate, and is located at the Glendale Shoals Gateway Park. The thirteen foot tall Magnolia blossom symbolizes the rebirth of the Glendale area and Lawson’s Fork Creek.

Ms. Bate attended Converse College in the 1970s and after graduation, taught art and music, but she soon realized her true calling was metalworking and blacksmithing. She is responsible for many works, including the main fence at Chimney Rock, several pieces at Biltmore estates, and many other sculptures in public places in North and South Carolina.

Glendale Shoals is a 13 acre nature preserve located on Lawson’s Fork Creek at the intersection of Clifton Glendale Road and Emma Cudd Road. Visitors can climb on the boulders below the waterfall that spills over the dam at the site of the former textile mill, hike the short trail, or explore the burned out ruins. It is home to a variety of plant, animal, and bird life. The iron bridge and the old buildings are some of the most photographed sites in Spartanburg.

So pack some snacks, grab a camera and a friend, and head on out to Glendale!
