Hampton Heights Historic Marker

The Hampton Heights Historical marker is located at the intersection of South Church Street (221) and West Hampton Avenue, near a small gazebo park.

Located one mile south of Morgan Square, Hampton Heights is considered to be the oldest neighborhood in Spartanburg. The first home was constructed in 1885, with most being built between 1900 and the 1930s. Until the late 19th century, the land occupied by Hampton Heights was farmland owned by the Kirby family. After the Civil War, during the Reconstruction period, Union soldiers were camped there.

Many of Spartanburg’s upper middle class citizens built large Victorian style homes. Later, in the early 1900s, this trend gave way to smaller Craftsman style bungalows with smaller yards.

During the 1960s and 1970s, as most families moved further from the center of town, many of the historic homes fell into disrepair. Thankfully, in the early 1980s, families began returning to Hampton Heights and lovingly restored the homes to their former beauty.

In 1983, thanks to the efforts of residents, Hampton Heights was placed on the National Register of Historic Places. In 1998 it was listed as a Local Historic District.

Inside Hampton Height’s borders are two small parks, Willow Oaks Park and Irwin Park.
