Cowpens Depot Historic Marker

The Cowpens Depot is a train depot. Sort of. Well it was. Now it’s not. Built in 1896 for Southern Railway, it served passengers until the 1950s and handled freight until 1967, when it was closed.

Originally located at Brown and Church Streets, it was slated for destruction until a group of local citizens stepped in to save it. The railroad agreed to donate the building to the town, with the condition that it be moved from railroad property. It was moved one block to its current location at 120 Palmetto Street in 1982.

Opened as the Cowpens Museum and Civic Center in 1985, it was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1997. Displayed items include clothing, photos, medals, and personal letters of former USS Cowpens crewmen.

Maintained by the Town of Cowpens and the Cowpens Historical Society, the Depot is open by appointment and during special events and holidays.
